There are various wedding ceremonies practiced within most recent weddings. These short ceremonies represent unity, strength, love, blending of families and more. Here are a list of popular ceremonies practiced during modern weddings:

Unity Sand Ceremony - This is a short ceremony in which the bride and groom pour alternating sand colors into a main vase. These vases can be personalized and kept as a keepsake. Representing unity and blending of families, this ceremony can also incorporate other individuals, such as children.

Unity Candle Ceremony - This ceremony, similar to the unity sand ceremony, represents the unity of two people. The bride and groom each light a taper candle and jointly light the middle candle, the large pillar.

Love Letter Ceremony - The love letter ceremony requires the bride and groom to write each other love letters prior to the wedding. These letters are ceremoniously locked in a box with wine glasses and other symbolic items. This box is not to be opened until a predetermined date (such as an anniversary) or if the couple happen to reach a roadblock in the relationship.

Wedding Vows - This ceremony, while very common, is simply when a bride and groom recite their own vows. This is a nice moment to be video taped and kept as a keepsake down the road.

4 Hot Summer Trends

Trend 1: Dynamic Colors

Bright hues are popular for summer weddings. But if you try to use too many colors in one space, you might wind up with a look that's more carnival than nuptial.

What's hot now: Think sophisticated brights. Sticking with just two hues (or two plus an accent color) will keep your space unified. Rather than splashing color all over your reception space, use one dynamic color for a strong statement -- think all-pink centerpieces or bold orange table linens. This holds especially true for your centerpieces: Instead of multicolored centerpieces, alternate single-color floral arrangements for a pulled-together look.

Trend 2: Laid-back Music

It's summer, so why not lighten the ambience a little? A pianist or string trio will do the trick if you're having a formal cocktail hour, but to really embrace the season, think about alternative summery music styles.

What's hot now: Create a laid-back vibe during your cocktail hour and dinner with steel drums or a singer accompanied with a ukulele. For the reception, heat up the evening with sultry sounds -- we love the idea of incorporating classic swing or big band music to add a fast, upbeat tempo to the evening.

Trend 3: New Themes

Basic beach or garden themes are classic for the summer. Instead of a generic setting or theme, take the personal route.

What's hot now: Think of your favorite summer hangouts when planning your theme. Rather than just any beach, bring in elements specific to the beach you remember as a kid. If it was a cabin in the woods, go for a mountain theme. Another idea: Honor your honeymoon destination. If you're having a garden wedding but honeymooning in Hawaii, add orchids to your bouquets or fill the bottoms of your centerpiece vases with black lava rocks.

Trend 4: Unexpected Invitations

Letterpressed invites in ivory and black are still as popular and elegant as ever. But if you want to go for something a little more unexpected, ultra-creative wedding invitation designers definitely have color and printing options for you.

What's hot now: Use colors in a new and unexpected way on your invites by reversing the typical invitation color scheme. For example, rather than using fuchsia lettering on a cream-colored invite, opt for cream print on fuchsia paper. Or mix it up -- do the cream-colored invite with fuchsia writing, and then a bright pink reply card with a cream-colored font. Consider the material of your invite as well. One hot-off-the-press idea: Get fabric-printed invites, programs, and escort cards for a laid-back look perfect for summer

The Tradition of a Bridal Wishing Well

by jen 19. December 2008 08:17

The Wedding Wishing Well has established itself as a bridal tradition to accept envelopes, checks, and other monetary gifts at weddings, showers and celebrations. Like a regular wishing well, the guest is generally wishing the newly wed couple good luck, prosperity and happiness. This works well with moden-day couples because the bride and groom generally start their marriage with enough furniture and belongings. Place the wishing well on the table in the reception hall or entrance room for guests to view and fill. All wishing wells can be kept as keepsakes or used as jewelry boxes!

Modern Day Handfasting, a Celtic Tradition

by sandi 5. December 2008 19:20

Those with few formal religious beliefs, who are still looking to incorporate a formal traditional aspect to offset what typically can become a very dry civil ceremony, can look to a modern day handfasting.

While traditionally the handfasting ceremony was performed using a rope, giving rise to the expression "tying the knot", today's handfasting rituals use a ribbon to bind the newly married couple's hands together. Ribbons that in today's modern era, often come encrypted with thoughts and wishes for the bride and groom on their wedding day.

For some this ribbon is pre-made with their message of hope printed directly on, then braided together with other pre-printed messaged ribbon, or other colors, to form a smooth yet silken rope.

For others the messages that are written on the ribbons come from friends and family, similar to a ring warming ceremony, where they have a chance to impart their thoughts and wishes to the bridal couple.

If looking to your friends and family to add to your ceremony, a good time to do this is during the rehearsal dinner the night before. Not only does it ensure that your nearest and dearest friends take part in this process, it also gives you the peace of mind of knowing that the ribbon is completed, braided and ready for the next days ceremony.

Not all officiants are comfortable with performing a handfasting ceremony, so be sure to talk it over with them before choosing one, or be prepared to have more than one; one officiant who can conduct your wedding ceremony and another who can conduct your handfasting.

Typically this type of ritual is conducted either at the beginning of the ceremony or at the very end, but being as it is your wedding, you can place it anywhere within the ceremony you like.

The Celtic practice of handfasting is as old as marriage itself, but there are always new ways to incorporate new practices and the modern day handfasting exemplifies this. By putting your own twist on an old ritual you can make it fit your wedding day in a way that best suits your needs.
